When it comes to the aesthetic of the world and what you want to feature, having a clear idea beforehand and planning it out definitely helps. I would start with a small island first and then when you have more confidence try with bigger worlds. The terrain tools for example are like the sculpting and painting tools from the build mode but on steroids, the object placement is different, laying down roads and paths is totally new, etc. First you’ll need some time to get familiar with all the different options and tools. If you’ve never really used it and want to get started with it, my first tip is to start with small goals, don’t set huge objectives because it will be frustrating. CAW has always remained a beta and not everything is super straightforward, but with a little practice you can get the hang of it. Getting to a comfortable level doesn’t take that long though, but you need some patience and cool ideas that motivate you.
